The movement

How to do a barbell back squat

Use a steady range and keep each rep controlled from start to finish.

  1. 01

    Set the rack

Place the hooks below shoulder height and set the safety bars for your squat depth. Center the bar on your upper back rather than your neck.

  2. 02

    Unrack and brace

Stand up to clear the hooks and take a short walkout. Choose a stable stance, grip the floor with your whole foot, and brace your trunk.

  3. 03

    Sit down between your feet

Bend your hips and knees together. Let your knees follow your toes and lower to a depth you can control without losing your balance.

  4. 04

    Stand through the floor

Push through your whole foot while keeping the trunk steady. Reset your breath and brace before the next repetition.

Good to know

Barbell Back Squat questions.

How deep should I back squat?

Use a comfortable depth you can control with stable feet and a braced trunk. Anatomy, mobility, and the squat variation affect depth; keep it consistent when comparing results.

Can my knees move past my toes?

Yes, that can be a normal part of a squat. Keep your heels supported and let the knees follow the direction of your toes instead of forcing a fixed shin angle.

What muscles does a back squat work?

The quads and glutes produce much of the movement. The adductors and trunk also contribute, with their roles changing through the range of motion.

How should I log squat weight?

Record the total barbell load, including the bar. Use a note when you change depth, bar position, or equipment so a heavier number does not hide a different movement.

Use the record

How to progress your barbell back squat

Choose a rep range suited to your routine and a load you can control. Build repeatable reps before considering the smallest practical load increase. Compare the same variation, range, and effort across sessions rather than forcing a heavier weight every workout.
